Helmet

A ballistic helmet is considered to be an essential personal protection equipment, as it protects the user's head against different threats, mainly: protection against shrapnel, low speed gun or rifle projectiles and falls in the operation field. Therefore, the helmet will be developed to ensure level IIIA (NIJ- National Institute of Justice) ballistic protection and STANAG 2920 anti shrapnel protection. The helmet's development is based on the research into two fundamental functional components regarding it's performance: the user's comfort and the mechanical protection performance, given that only with these two elements is it possible to achieve a product with improved properties, fulfilling the needs mentioned previously. In this case, comfort is determined as the user's helmet/head interface, implying issues such as breathability, thermal touch, ergonomics, humidity management, among others. Similarly, the mechanical protection performance is considered to be found in the relation between the impact element/helmet/head, encompassing concepts such as impact resistance, energy dissipation, rigidity, among others.

Capacete

Um capacete balístico é considerado um equipamento de proteção individual indispensável, uma vez que permite proteger a cabeça do utilizador contra diferentes ameaças nomeadamente: proteção contra estilhaços, projéteis de pistola ou de espingarda a baixa velocidade e contra quedas no campo de operações. Desta forma, o capacete será desenvolvido com o objetivo de conferir proteção balística nível IIIA (NIJ- National Institute of Justice) e proteção anti estilhaços conforme STANAG 2920. O desenvolvimento do capacete tem como base o estudo de duas componentes funcionais fundamentais ao seu desempenho, o conforto dos militares e o desempenho de proteção mecânica, uma vez que apenas com a combinação destes dois elementos será possível obter um produto com caraterísticas melhoradas, respondendo aos requisitos impostos anteriormente. Neste caso, assume-se o conforto como a interface capacete/cabeça do utilizador, envolvendo questões como respirabilidade, toque térmico, ergonomia, gestão de humidade, entre outros. Da mesma forma, assume-se que o desempenho de proteção mecânico se encontra relacionado com a relação elemento de impacto/capacete/cabeça, envolvendo conceitos como resistência ao impacto, dissipação de energia, rigidez, entre outros.
