Vest

A bulletproof vest is personal protection equipment which aims to protect the user's torso fro projectiles, both at high and low speed. Besides this specific protections, it also needs to provide protection against other threats such as cuts or perforation. Bulletproof vests also serves as a connective support for accessories and other storage/transport items, using the M.O.L.L.E. system. Thus, the bulletproof vest is formed by the tactical vest and ballistic inserts, placed in it's interior to ensure the required level of ballistic protection.

According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard, a ballistic vest can offer different levels of protection, ranging from the lowest (IIA) to the highest level (IV). The difference between the levels is due to the need for more or less protection and the use of different materials and structures. The number of layers of material used in the ballistic inserts' production is directly related to the level of protection offered. In this way, this kind of product's main objectives are the reduction of projectiles' speed and the reduction of trauma (back face signature) caused by the projectiles' impact on the vest.

The bulletproof vest's development will be based on two distinct aspects: comfort and mechanical performance. Regarding comfort, the vest must provide it's user with thermal comfort regardless of the surrounding environment, both in warm and cold climes, and ergonomic comfort always allowing the necessary mobility and agility.

As for mechanical performace, the vest's development is further divided into two categories, protection against cuts and perforation (tactical vest) and ballistic protection (ballistic insert). In the latter's case, projectile blocking and impact trauma reduction are fundamental study factors.
